Aurélie en VIE aux USA: Présentation de ma/mon VIE aux Etats Unis!

Hello!

Je me présente un petit peu! Je m’appelle Aurélie, je suis originaire de Hyères, dans le Var. J’ai fait mes études à Lyon, où j’ai obtenu mon diplôme d’ingénieur en 2015. J’ai fait une année de césure ainsi que 6 mois de projet de fin d’études au Royaume Uni. J’ai ensuite trouvé un travail la bas, où je suis restée un peu plus de trois ans. Au total, j’ai été en Angleterre quasiment d’Aout 2013 jusqu’à Décembre 2018, et ces 5 années ont surement été les meilleures de ma vie ! Cependant, à la fin, je n’aimais plus mon travail et je voulais rentrer en France. Ironiquement, j’ai fini par postuler pour le VIE (Volontariat International en Entreprise) à l’autre bout du monde (j’étais persuadée que je ne serais jamais prise !). Et me voilà à Philadelphie, ou « Philly », en Pennsylvanie, dans le nord est des Etats Unis. Je suis arrivée en Janvier 2019, pendant un des mois les plus froids de l’année, c’était vraiment un choc (thermique pour le coup !) pour moi.

Après 10 mois aux Etats Unis, je commence enfin ce blog ! Il me reste encore 8 mois, donc ça va, j’ai encore le temps ! Comme on dit, « mieux vaut tard que jamais ».

Avant de partir pour les Etats Unis, je voulais commencer un blog afin de pouvoir partager ma vie ici avec mes amis, ma famille (j’avais en fait créé le blog, je n’ai jamais rien posté dessus). J’adore la photographie, j’adore voyager, et j’adore partager les bonnes adresses, les coins que j’aime et mes photos. De plus, il y a toujours quelque chose à prendre en photo dans ce pays de fou ! L’hiver est vraiment très froid, le printemps, lui arrive très tard, il est court mais très joli, l’été est chaud et humide mais possède son charme, quant à l’automne ici, c’est le MEILLEUR moment de l’année, le plus beau, offrant toutes ces belles couleurs, avec des citrouilles et des décorations d’Halloween partout (totalement ma came). Je voulais aussi partager mon expérience de VIE. J’ai eu un peu de mal à trouver des informations lorsque j’étais en pleine paperasse administrative pour préparer mon VIE, mon visa etc, donc j’ai pensé qu’écrire des articles à ce propos pourrait aider des futurs VIE !

Je pense que je n’ai pas commencé le blog plus tôt car pour être totalement honnête, mon arrivée ici a été très stressante avec toute la paperasse administrative, etc. L’hiver a été très rude et long. Je n’aimais pas le début de mon expérience ici et je me plaignais constamment, donc je me voyais mal venter les mérites du VIE et de la vie aux Etats Unis… ! Maintenant, j’aime Philly de plus en plus (même si l’hiver approche à grand pas… !), donc je prends plus plaisir à en parler et à partager mon expérience de manière positive.

Hi all !

A little bit about me! My name is Aurélie (to be pronounced kind of like “oh really” for English speaking people), I come from Hyères, in Provence, South of France (the best part, isn’t it?!), because yes, France is not just about Paris :) ! I studied in Lyon, where I got an engineering degree (MSc), did a one-year internship then a 6 months end of study internship in the UK. I found a job there, where I stayed more than three years. In total, I was in the UK from August 2013 to December 2018, and these 5 years were some of the best of my life! Unfortunately, towards the end, I did not like my job anymore I was looking to go back to France. Funnily enough, I ended up applying to this VIE position at the other side of the world, where I thought I would not have a chance to be accepted! And here I am, in Philadelphia, or “Philly”, in Pennsylvania, in the northeast of the USA. I arrived at the beginning of January 2019, during one of the coldest months of the year, it was quite a choc!

I finally get to stat this blog after 10 months in the USA! I still have 8 more months so it’s good, I still have time! “Better late than never”, as we say.

Before I left Europe for the USA, I just wanted to start a blog to be able to share with my friends and family about my life in the USA (I actually created it all, just never posted anything). I love photography and travelling, I love sharing my good adresses, tips and pictures. There is always something to take picture of in this crazy country! Winter is impressively cold, spring is late, short but beautiful somehow, summer is hot and humid but has its charm, and fall is just THE BEST time of the year with all these colors, pumpkins and Halloween (totally my drug). I also wanted to share my experience about the VIE (international volunteer program) program and process. I was looking at some information while I was applying and going through all the (stressful) visa application steps and it was pretty hard to find anything. I thought this could be helpful for future VIEs.

I think I didn’t start the blog sooner because to be totally honest, the arrival here was very stressful with all the paperwork. The winter was very rough. I did not like the beginning of my experience here and I was complaining all the time, so you can guess I did not feel like promoting any of this…! Now, I like Philly more and more (even though the winter is coming back soon…!), so it’s good to talk about it and share my experience in a positive way.

The main articles you will be able to find here will be about travelling, my recommendations, advices and good addresses, travelling in solo, VIE procedures (application, visa and sponsor, DS7002 and DS2019, meeting at the US embassy in Paris, paperwork), pros and cons of VIE, getting the driving license and a car here, and I will post some articles about differences between UK vs USA of course.
